About George Lancey 1742-1773.......

The book, The Meeting House Tragedy, An Episode In The Life Of A New England Town
by Charles Clark and illustrated by John W. Hatch, tells the story of the terrible accident on September 7, 1773 in Wilton, New Hampshire, at the Unitarian Church. My gr gr gr gr gr gr grandfather, George Lancey was killed when a very large beam fell. He was not the only man who was killed that day. According to a newspaper article I found, many others were seriously injured as well.
When I started my investigation of my ancestral roots I had absolutely no idea as to the type of things I would uncover. And I have found many interesting facts about my family's past.
I knew and suspected from stories that were told so long ago, that perhaps in the family there were people who came here before or at the time of the Mayflower. Never did I expect to find so many who did. I know lots of my friends talk about their families coming to this country as immigrants and going through Ellis Island...many of them haven't even been in this country as a people for even 100 years. I have had in recent years, relatives who have lived to be 100 years old.....so 100 years in some ways can be an interesting number for me. My "people" and this goes for both sides of my family, have been in this country for close to 400 years. Sure, very few came here in the late 1880's...but I can count them on one hand and have some fingers left over.
I am beyond amazement when I am gathering in the history of my family.
There are many nights, especially the very dark ones, when I stand alone in the quiet stillness just gazing at the bright stars in their constellation formations...thinking about what a tiny part of the universe I am... My ancestors before me make up a of huge universe as well and they collectively give me the same feeling as the big heavenly sky.
